The Other Side of the Glass

"Our" 48 hour film competition entry. I use the quotation marks because I had little to do with the making of it. In fact, with the mood i was in that day, i may have even been a hindrance to the making of 'the other side of the glass.'

Man, I'm blogging at the speed of a light hog.
Keep up!

Doug Dank

Song of the Day

NPR has a "song of the day."
The other day, the song was "They took a vote and said no" by Sunset Rubdown, off shoot band of Spencer Krug of Wolf Parade. Apparently the album "Shut up, I am dreaming" is a rock opera. A "jaunty" one, at that.

Here's their myspace page with 4 more songs (i like "I'll believe anything, you'll believe anything").
This fan site has lyrics.

DOGS!

From the Briarcliff Animal Clinic.
Just because you never know who's out there reading and in the market for a new pet, or who might be swayed by the right spayed or neutered animal:

Recently, when the Clayton County Animal Control had to greatly reduce their dog population, the Briarcliff Animal Foundation adopted four dogs, which were scheduled for euthanasia. We have provided appropriate medical treatment, spayed and neutered them, and given them their vaccinations. They are now ready for adoption into foster or permanent homes. We need your help in finding homes for them. The dogs are:

Betty, a spayed, black female Australian Shepherd mix is a very sweet, shy dog. She weighs about 40 pounds and may become a Frisbee champion with the right training. She is about 2 years old, is anxious to please, and needs a loving adoptive home.

Maggie, a spayed, brindle boxer-pit-bull mix is very sweet. She weighs about 20 pounds and is about 6 months old. She is very affectionate and eager to please.

Mama Cass, a spayed yellow lab (purebreed) is about two years old and weighs about 50 pounds. She had heartworms when we got her, but has been treated and will be healthy. She is very sweet. and calm.

Wally, is a red-brown neutered male chow mix, weighing about 60 pounds. He is about 2 years old. When we received Wally, he was having ear problems and has had surgery on both ears. He is recovering nicely and should not have any more health problems.

All of these dogs have been given a thorough physical exam, provided medical treatment where warranted, and have been given all of their vaccinations. They are ready to go into loving homes. If you or someone you know are interested in adopting one of these dogs, please call (404) 874-6303, the Briarcliff Animal Clinic, or respond to this email.

As always, we appreciate your support. These pets could not be up for adoption without your generous support of the Foundation.

Independents Day

Get it?
Well, i guess you wouldn't. Yet.
This is from Adam Thompson:
"We want you – to come out – ON SUNDAY JUNE 4th – to NEW STREET (aka Push Push Theater) in Decatur – at 6:30 PM for a little party we're calling DAILIES INDEPENDENTS DAY. It's a chance to get involved. Find out what you can do. Network with local film people. Learn about Dailies. What is it? How does it work? How can I play? If you're already a Dailies filmmaker, then you know your journey has just begun.

Burned out on corporate industrial gigs, commercials for deodorant, pointless short film challenges and the same old Hollywood story? Join us. Celebrate uniqueness. Process over product. Collaboration over isolation. Experimentation. Failure. Success. Perfect your craft.

Got it? Still have questions? GOOD, because we will also be unveiling the new Dailies Constitution. A living document intended to pave the way for processes and procedures for Dailies Projects yet to come.

DAILIES INDEPENDENTS DAY – a night of frolic and revelry SUNDAY JUNE 4th – 6:30 PM at New Street (aka Push Push Theater) in Decatur.

Includes a presentation from the newly elected Dailies board, a retrospective montage of Dailies films and stills, and live music, cocktails and a little dancing. Its a party, a celebration, a fiesta if you will, of Dailies filmmakers - past, present, and future. Or just a chance to confess your addiction to filmmaking. "

Get it? Independents Day.

Photography will be seen, beer will be drunk, gadunkadunks will be gadunked

Stacey Bode, local shutterbug, hosts party.

All she asks is that you look at her photography while you drink beer and dance.
Is that too much to ask?

I'll answer me, "no!"

In fact, once you start looking at her photos, you'll ask yourself why the hell you're even drinking the beer.

I'll answer you, "it was free!"

Then you'll ask why you're dropping that ass to the funky beats instead of looking at the photos more.

I'll answer you, "the free beer!"

Here's a little message from Stacey about the party:
push push is hosting an exhibit of my artsy fartsy portraits, and the "opening" is saturday may 20th from 9:30pm on. gonna be keg of pbr. gonna be dj & dancin'. gonna be food bits. if you can make it, that'd be swell. and i will hug you. for an uncomfortably long period of time.

How could you say no to that?!

I don't have an answer for me on that one.
Personally, i like that when you do a google image search for stacey bode, a bunch of pictures of daniel pettrow pop up. nice.

The answer was SNL. ok. goodfine.

Bart comes back for a third round as monologist for long-form improv show, The Doug Dank Project.

Wednesday night at 10:00pm, it's only $5, and there's tasty cold cheap beer, and snacks which just
may include hot out of the Otis-Spunkmeyer-Easy-Bake-esque-but-much-hotter-and- therefore-more-dangerous-mini-oven.

At Push Push Theatre in Decatur, right behind The Corner Pub and Figo on New Street off of College Ave.

Jonathan Coulton

You've probably all heard the "Baby Got Back" song on the radio. But thanks to Mack for the heads up to this guy's site.
My favorites so far are "First of May," "Re Your Brains," "Gambler's Prayer," "Christmas is Interesting," and especially especially the mashup of Chicago's "25 or 6 to 4" and The Beatles' "When I'm 64," "When I'm 25 or 64."
Lots and lots of free downloads, but I'm positive I'll pay for some of this. It's worth it.
Check it.
Remember what happened when you didn't check out the last recommendation. Let's not relive that tragedy.

What you missed

if you didn't go to Pleaseeasaur last night at the Earl.

*drinking more than you originally planned because the show started later than you thought it would
*a big group of fun people
*Club Awesome, a band
*a free Club Awesome cd
*a lone drunk girl in a red dress that looked like the kind people only wear on soap operas jumping up and then dancing self-consciously to a Club Awesome song.
*red dress drunk girl yelling encore while band was packing up their instruments.
*a hilarious show by Pleaseeasaur.
*witnessing total commitment to comedy bits
*Randy's rape wagon and name somehow showing up in a song by a total stranger ("Strangers have the best candy").
*the best song about dog shit (or possibly anything) ever.
*a close runner-up to dog shit, a song about a limo company called "No Prob Limo" complete with a letter to the company from a guy named Brandon.

I see on his site that he's going to Fargo, ND on the 19th. That should be interesting.
Thanks to clunky for the heads up about the show.

So, please be careful next time you decide to not enjoy something I've heartily recommended.

I mean, We only have this one crazy life.
Agreed?
So, who's going to Doug Dank on Wednesday?

Strangers with Candy movie

Looks like it will be hitting theatres in July, thanks to ThinkFilm and World Wide Pants.

...Sir Ian Holm...!

A Scanner Darkly

Richard Linklater's film of Phillip K. Dick's novel "and own experiences." Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder (rotoscoped tig ol bitties and all), Woody Harrelson, Rory Cochrane (who is on the ever-so-cheesy CSI: Miami) and what looks to be a very entertaining Robert Downey, Jr. Scheduled to open July 7. Uses the same software program as "Waking Life." But seems to be used to better effect in this film, judging from the trailer.

Synopsis from the website:
"A Scanner Darkly" is set in suburban Orange County, California in a future where America has lost the war on drugs. When one reluctant undercover cop is ordered to start spying on his friends, he is launched on a paranoid journey into the absurd, where identities and loyalties are impossible to decode. It is a cautionary tale of drug use based on the novel by Philip K. Dick and his own experiences.

Like a graphic novel come to life, "A Scanner Darkly" will use live action photography overlaid with an advanced animation process (interpolated rotoscoping) to create a haunting, highly stylized vision of the future. The technology, first employed in Richard Linklater's 2001 film "Waking Life," has evolved to produce even more emotional impact and detail. Written for the Screen and Directed by:
Richard Linklater

Medium

He and I agreed on everything.

No two people ever met so often in the middle.

You might be thinking that that was great. You would. You could.

I didn’t think it was great. I couldn’t. Well, I wouldn’t .

Great's such a strong word.

I can see your point. (Your criticisms of me are valid. That makes sense. Stand up for myself? Yeah, I should. You're right. But, then again, they do have a point. Libra. Why?) But from where I stand I can see everyone’s point. They all have good points, I can see them. And if I’m not mistaken, everyone has the same number of equally good points. That’s the advantage of standing in the middle.

There’s this, but then there’s that.

Nobody ever gets hurt in room-temperature medium.

He said, “We never fight. That’s crazy.”

I said, “Well, I don’t think that’s crazy at all.”

He said, “You’re right.” And left.

Poetry, Patriotic Posers and Pensive Presidents

was looking up a poem i'd heard on the Simpsons and found on the same site, the same page, actually (different from the link above) a couple interesting things. First, Lee Greenwood's "Proud to be an American" was listed as a ...poem...on the same page and he is listed in the poet list at top of the page right after W. H. Auden. The site is called "literacyrules.com"

Anyway, also on the same page is a poem by Abraham Lincoln:

You are Young
Abraham Lincoln

You are young, and I am older;
You are hopeful, I am not -
Enjoy life, ere it grow colder -
Pluck the roses ere they rot.

Teach your beau to heed the lay -
That sunshine soon is lost in shade -
That now's as good as any day -
To take thee, Rosa, ere she fade.

This, then, sent me off looking around at some Lincoln stuff. And found this, which was apparently his favorite poem, by William Knox. "He once remarked, 'I would give all I am worth, and go in debt, to be able to write so fine a piece as I think that is.'" And he doesn't lie.

Called "Mortality." I might mention he did suffer with bouts of depression. But it really is a nice poem. Lee (Greenwood, not Robert E.) couldn't make a country song out of it, but it's still pretty good.

Something else i didn't know---he dated Ann Rutledge, the she died of "fever." He dated then proposed to Mary Owens who gave him the Heisman, so to speak. Later, he met and dated and proposed to Mary Todd. Then he breaks off the engagement, then resumes relationship the next year, and is married soon after.

Clunky, you may have something to add, I know you're a Lincoln fan.

Jamie Warde is a capital fellow

Dig Doug.

Doug Dank is toNIGHT!
10:00pm at Push Push Theatre in Decatur, as always.

JAMIE WARDE, technical director at Dad's Garage Theatre and all-around great-guy and oddball-hunter s. thompson fan-stoner-raconteur, will be the monologist that fuels some interesting long-form improv.
